State Sen. Sonya Halpern (D-Ga.) is cheering the rise of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court, saluting her as a "brilliant mind."
Halpern celebrated Jackson's nomination as the first Black woman ever to be elected to the high court.
"JUSTICE #KetanjiBrownJackson has a nice ring to it," Halpern said in a recent tweet. "She is a brilliant legal mind with the utmost character & integrity, bringing a depth and breadth of legal experience. She will make an exceptional Supreme Court Justice and yes, #history was made today! Glass ceilings shattered."
Jackson was confirmed on April 7 by a 53-to-47 vote. Three Republicans joined all 50 members of the Democratic caucus in backing her.
The vote came following a number of attempts to paint Jackson as a "liberal extremist who had coddled criminals," a recent report by the New York Times said. Backers saw her confirmation as a mark of how far the country has come.
The Times report noted that the overwhelmingly polarized process ending with a speck of bipartisanship, as three Republicans—Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine), Lisa Murkowski (R-Ark.) and Mitt Romney (R-Utah)—crossed party lines to confirm Jackson.
