Gubernatorial candidate David Perdue is taking a break from the campaign trail for a self-imposed quarantine because of the coronavirus.
Former Senator Perdue tested positive for COVID-19 recently, according to Fox 5 Atlanta, which received a statement from his campaign office.
"He is vaccinated and boosted,” campaign officials told the station. “He will be quarantining and following the updated guidance from the CDC, and he looks forward to being back out on the campaign trail as soon as possible.”
Perdue is challenging Gov. Brian Kemp for the Republican nomination. The two face off in a May 24 primary, with the winner advancing to the November general election.
With almost four months left until the vote, a week or so off at this point shouldn’t carry a lot of weight in the primary as he’ll have ample time to make up for his respite from the campaign trail.
Although the campaign is in its early stages, it has already turned contentious, Fox 5 Atlanta said. Recently, Perdue filed suit against Kemp over what he calls misuse of campaign funds. Kemp responded with an ethics complaint, charging that Perdue timed his move with the start of the legislative session.
Perdue has former President Donald Trump’s backing in the race, while Kemp has a strong economy to build his campaign on.
