GA US House District 5 issued the following announcement on Dec. 17. 

Today, Congresswoman Nikema Williams (GA-05) announced that Georgia will receive $1.962 billion in the first round of federal funding under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. 

This first round of funding includes: $1.711 billion to improve roads and bridges across the state, $92.5 million for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, and $158.6 million to strengthen water infrastructure, including the replacement of lead pipes. This is the first round of funding under the five years of federal investment in Georgia authorized by the new law.

“This money can’t get here soon enough,” said Congresswoman Williams, who is a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. 

“I’ve traveled with mayors throughout the Fifth District and it’s worrying to see crumbling roads and bridges in desperate need of investment in every city. With this first round of funding from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, we’re putting Georgians to work rebuilding the links between our communities. These federal dollars represent a strong first step toward strengthening our essential physical infrastructure – and with them, we’ll cut down commute times, help small businesses get goods to market, and keep travelers safe.

“Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is our nation's busiest and most efficient airport, a gateway to the world for tens of millions of passengers who fly through every year. This investment will help Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport continue to provide state-of-the-art service for every traveler. 

“Ensuring everyone has safe and clean water infrastructure is something I’ve worked on for years. Sadly, too many Georgia families still don’t have access to clean water – with lead, forever chemicals and other contaminants posing a serious health threat. But this money will strengthen our water infrastructure and forge important progress toward a lead-free future for everyone, no matter your ZIP code.” 

The American Society of Civil Engineers gave Georgia a C grade on its Infrastructure Report Card, finding many deficiencies that require immediate attention. With this funding – and more to come – the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will create good-paying union jobs strengthening crippled infrastructure.
