The pitching staff for the Atlanta Braves made sure the team’s undefeated record at Truist Park this postseason stayed intact, helping blank the visiting Houston Astros 2-0 in Game 3 of the World Series.
Rookie right-hand pitcher Ian Anderson delivered a memorable performance on the mound.
According to MLB.com, the 23-year-old Anderson won his duel against fellow rookie hurler Luis Garcia of the Astros by crafting a no-hitter through five innings.
The Rexford, N.Y. native, who was high school teammates with Atlanta Hawks swingman Kevin Huerter, fanned four Astros hitters and walked three in the 76-pitch outing.
It was the first time two rookie pitchers faced each other in a World Series game since 2006 when injured Astros starter Justin Verlander, then a member of the Detroit Tigers, and the St. Louis Cardinals’ Anthony Reyes went head-to-head in that Fall Classic’s opener.
Offensively, third baseman Austin Riley thumped an RBI double in the third inning while catcher Travis d'Arnaud smashed an insurance solo home run in the eighth, MLB.com reported.
For d’Arnaud, it was his second postseason homer – he also banged a solo HR during Game 2 – but his first at Truist.
The win was worth the 22-yearlong wait Braves fans had to endure between Series' games played in Atlanta.
According to WSB, the last World Series game played in Atlanta was at the Braves' old home, the now-Center Parc Stadium in downtown, on Oct. 24, 1999.
The Braves lost to the eventual champion New York Yankees 7-2.
The ABC affiliate additionally reported that the last Fall Classic home victory for the Braves before the night of Oct. 29 was a 1-0 shutout of the Cleveland Indians at the defunct Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium to win the 1995 title.
The Braves once again lead the series with a 2-1 advantage.
