Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said that Atlanta will use nearly $171 million in American Rescue Plan funds for pressing needs that include public safety and rental assistance.
The continuation of core city services, response to the COVID-19 pandemic and continued investment to addressing the pandemic's economic impact on the community caused by COVID-19 were named as the overall goals for the funding by the mayor,, a release by the Mayor's Office of Communications said.
“The City’s allocation of American Rescue Plan funds will be used to address our most pressing needs, including significant investments in public safety and rental assistance for our residents. Thank you to the Biden Administration for prioritizing the needs of communities across America,” Bottoms said.
She will ask City Council to approve spending $5 million on community-based violence intervention programs and $2.5 million to buy additional cameras and license plate readers for the city’s Video Integration Center, the mayor's office reported.
The mayor's office said the administration is working with City Council to approve how the federal funds will be spent.
Other areas in which one-time funding will be used include affordable housing and rental assistance, small business and economic development, homeless and food insecurity, workforce and youth development and COVID-19 emergency response, the release said.
