The application deadline to submit documents for financial assistance to help offset costs associated with special needs students and special challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic is Wednesday, June 30.

A total of $10 million is available to help and the deadline to submit applications is Wednesday, June 30, the Georgia Department of Education (DOE) said in a release.

"These reimbursements will help families overcome financial challenges faced during an unprecedented school year as we begin returning to normal in Georgia," Kemp said in a release.

Special needs students and their families who have been in the Georgia public school system since at least March 13 are eligible for the financial aid, Grice Connect reported.

Expenses that are related to "educational achievement, personal development, and emotional wellbeing" are eligible for the reimbursement, the Georgia DOE said.

More than 222,000 students with special needs live in Georgia, the Georgia DOE said.

"Families with special needs students have until Wednesday, June 30, to apply for financial assistance to help offset costs over the last school year due to COVID-19," Kemp said in a Tweet

The Georgia Department of Education said it has been working with the Governor’s Office and the Governor's Office of Planning and Budget to determine the best way to help those most severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
