Homecoming weekend at Clark Atlanta University was marred by a late-night shooting near the campus that left four injured, including two CAU students.
According to a recent report by FOX 5 Atlanta, the shooting occurred just before 12:30 a.m. early Sunday morning, with fired shots hitting two CAU students, one Atlanta University Center (AUC) student and another non-student. While three victims were rushed to the hospital in stable condition, FOX 5 reports the fourth refused treatment.
“Unfortunately, our students must travel public streets in going between buildings on a daily basis,” CAU Police Chief Debra Williams said in a statement to FOX 5 Atlanta. “We note that the perpetrators were non-students, yet they have access to these thoroughfares. The safety of our students remains our top priority as we continue to work with the City of Atlanta for solutions to senseless violence impacting innocent students and residents.”
Authorities said shots rang out when a passenger in a passing car near Beckwith Street and James P. Brawley Drive opened fire, requiring paramedics to respond to the scene and ultimately transport three of the victims to Grady Hospital in stable condition, according to the report.
CAU student Jameah Alston told FOX 5 Atlanta she was at the scene of the Oct. 16 shooting and recalled a “lot of chaos.” Among comments, she said she believes the shooting and other incidents like it could’ve been prevented with more security on and around campus.
Atlanta police said that the shooting is still under criminal investigation and asks anyone with information to immediately contact the department.
Meanwhile, a school spokesperson said that CAU Public Safety has increased officer patrols around campus and in the area of the shooting.
