Tata Martino has officially returned as head coach of Atlanta United, marking a new chapter for both the manager and the club. Martino, who served as Atlanta United’s first-ever manager, previously led the team through two seasons filled with significant achievements and memorable matches.
During his initial tenure, Martino guided Atlanta United to some of its most notable victories. One highlight was on September 13, 2017, when Atlanta United defeated the New England Revolution 7-0 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium—still the club’s largest win. The match featured five different goal scorers and saw Josef Martínez secure a hat trick.
Another key moment came on March 18, 2017, when Atlanta United claimed its first home victory by beating Chicago Fire 4-0 at Bobby Dodd Stadium. Martínez contributed two goals in the second half after an early red card against Chicago gave Atlanta a numerical advantage.
A dramatic comeback took place on May 16, 2018, against San Jose Earthquakes. Despite trailing by two goals in the first half and again later in the match, Atlanta managed a 4-3 win thanks to late goals from Miguel Almirón and Martínez.
In postseason play, Martino’s leadership was evident during the MLS Cup Eastern Conference final first leg on November 25, 2018. Atlanta United secured a decisive 3-0 victory over New York Red Bulls at home before more than 70,000 fans at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
The pinnacle of Martino’s first stint came on December 8, 2018. In just their second year as a franchise, Atlanta United won their first MLS Cup title by defeating Portland Timbers 2-0 at home. The championship ended a long wait for professional sports silverware in Atlanta and showcased Martino’s tactical flexibility and ability to inspire his players.
Martino returns to an evolving club aiming for further success under his guidance.
