Caleb Wiley’s first professional goal was a memorable moment. It was a Sunday in Atlanta, and supporters gathered at Mercedes-Benz Stadium for the start of the 2022 MLS season. Atlanta United hosted Sporting Kansas City for the home opener, and about 67,523 attendees witnessed a strong 3-1 win for the team.
Minutes after entering the match for his first-team debut, Wiley scored. Fullback Andrew Gutman pointed to Wiley, allowing the 17-year-old to take the spotlight. Wiley formed his hands into a heart shape and lifted it toward the stands, showing his love for the city that raised him.
“It just shows how much love I have for this city and this club,” Wiley said after the match. “They’ve given me so much, so it’s just a way of giving back.”
Wiley’s journey began long before this goal. In 2018, he served as a ball boy during Atlanta United's MLS Cup victory over Portland. Born on December 22, 2004, in Atlanta, he grew up playing soccer in Morningside. He joined the Atlanta United Academy in 2016 at age 11 and progressed through its ranks.
In January 2022, he signed his Homegrown contract with the first team. Throughout his career, Wiley received support from coaches like Matt Lawrey and Tony Annan. His parents also played a significant role in his development.
“We just tried to give Caleb the opportunity,” said his parents, Chris and Jenn Wiley. “He loves the game.”
Wiley has worn many kits for Atlanta United and achieved numerous milestones. On July 22, it was announced that he had been transferred to Chelsea in the English Premier League.
“It’s a huge honor anytime that I can put on that jersey to represent my country,” Wiley said regarding his selection for the U.S. Olympic men's national team competing in Paris.
Atlanta will be watching as Wiley embarks on this new chapter in his career.
