After a week-long break from MLS matches, Atlanta United is preparing to start the second half of the 2024 season. On Saturday, June 15, they will face Houston Dynamo FC at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The break was much needed after the team played nine games—seven MLS and two Open Cup matches—over the span of a month. The week off also coincided with several players being called up for international duty.

Following practice on Thursday, MLS veteran Dax McCarty and interim head coach Rob Valentino spoke to local media. They discussed turning the page on the first half of the season, potential tactical changes under new leadership, and how the team can build confidence as they push for the playoffs.

Valentino addressed player availability for Saturday's match. Stian Gregersen will be unavailable due to a hamstring injury sustained during a match against Charlotte FC. Homegrown player Tyler Wolff, who missed over a month with an MCL strain, practiced with the team on Thursday. His match readiness will be confirmed on Friday when the club releases their Availability Report presented by Piedmont.

Despite unsatisfactory results in the first half of the season, there is optimism within the club. "It is not like we have five games left in the season," said McCarty. "We have half a season left. So, I hope there is not one guy in the locker room who thinks the season is over because it is not. We can definitely make it right and make some noise in the season still."

McCarty emphasized that scoring more goals is crucial for improvement. He noted that while chances are being created, they often do not translate into goals. "Rob has done a good job in trying to instill confidence in guys," said McCarty. "By saying 'try things' and if it doesn’t work, move onto the next play."

The team has faced numerous injuries this season, necessitating a "next man up" mentality. Young players like Caleb Wiley, Noah Cobb, and Efrain Morales have stepped up significantly. McCarty praised these young players as “brilliant” and highlighted their maturity.

With 18 years of MLS experience, McCarty serves as a leader for younger teammates by simply being himself. He believes that strong leadership often shines through during challenging times.

Valentino focused on process during his media availability session. He stressed that while results are important—such as earning three points per match—the process takes precedence. Shared ownership and finding daily excitement are key elements of this process for Valentino.

"The thing we have talked about is how to move forward," said Valentino when asked about handling potential frustration. "The shared ownership and shared success are part of our past... Now it is more about joy, excitement, and intensity."

Valentino echoed McCarty’s point about mistakes being part of sports but emphasized learning from new mistakes rather than repeating old ones.

Alongside building confidence, Atlanta aims to regain an aggressive mentality for Saturday's home game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium where they have lost five consecutive matches.

"We want this (Mercedes-Benz Stadium) to be a place where people come and bring energy," said Valentino. "We owe it to them to be better... And if I am going to be in charge at the moment, that is on me to lead that from the front."

Atlanta United seeks three points at home for their dedicated fans known as “the faithful 17s.” Those unable to attend can watch the 7:30 PM kickoff on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV or listen via local radio stations 92.9 The Game and La Mejor.
