Atlanta United announced Thursday that Carl Robinson is joining interim head coach Rob Valentino’s staff as an assistant coach. The former Wales international midfielder most recently served as assistant manager with Birmingham City in the English Football League.

Robinson began his coaching career in 2012 after retiring from professional play. His first coaching role was with Vancouver Whitecaps, where he spent two seasons as an assistant before being named head coach in December 2013. During his tenure, Robinson led Vancouver to three MLS Cup Playoff appearances in four seasons and secured the club’s first-ever Canadian Cup championship in 2015. He also guided the team to its inaugural appearance in the Concacaf Champions Cup, reaching the semi-finals during the 2016-17 tournament.

Following his stint with Vancouver, Robinson moved to Australia to work as head coach for both Newcastle Jets and Western Sydney Wanderers. He returned to the U.S. with D.C. United as an assistant coach under Wayne Rooney in 2023 and later followed Rooney to Birmingham City for the 2023-24 season. Additionally, Robinson has assisted the Wales National Team and holds a UEFA Pro License, which he earned in 2013.

Robinson had a distinguished playing career as a midfielder, earning 52 caps for Wales. He played primarily for Wolverhampton Wanderers, Sunderland, and Norwich City before joining Toronto FC in 2007, where he made 74 appearances. He concluded his playing career with New York Red Bulls in 2011, transitioning into a player-coach role during his final season.

Atlanta United (4-8-4, 16 points) returns to action on Saturday, June 15 when it hosts Houston Dynamo at Mercedes-Benz Stadium (7:30 p.m. ET). All Atlanta United matches are available with an MLS Season Pass subscription on the Apple TV app.
