State Representative Eric Bell (D-Jonesboro) will be hosting an "Epilepsy Train-A-Thon" event in Clayton County aimed at raising awareness about epilepsy and providing participants with essential skills in seizure first aid. The event is scheduled for Thursday, March 28, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the S. Truett Cathy Professional Learning Center.
According to Rep. Bell, the goal of the Epilepsy Train-A-Thon is to equip participants with the necessary knowledge and confidence to effectively assist individuals experiencing seizures in various settings. He emphasized the importance of events like this in providing support for those living with epilepsy and fostering inclusivity and understanding within communities. Bell stated, "The Epilepsy-Train-A-Thon seeks to bridge the gap by providing comprehensive training to participants, ensuring they are well-prepared to assist individuals experiencing seizures in their schools and communities."
Aly Clift, the Executive Director of the Epilepsy Foundation of Georgia, highlighted the significance of Senate Bill 45, known as AJ's Law, in ensuring that students in Georgia receive proper care for epilepsy or seizure disorders while at school. Clift shared her personal experience of being diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 14 and expressed gratitude for the impact AJ's Law has in supporting children and families dealing with epilepsy. She mentioned, "AJ’s law makes sure that kids and families with epilepsy disorders do not have to wonder who will have their back. With education we can beat the fear and stigma together."
The Epilepsy Train-A-Thon is a collaborative effort between the Epilepsy Foundation of Georgia and the Morehouse School of Medicine Epilepsy Board. The event will coincide with the annual "Purple Day" and will feature guest speaker AJ Taylor, after whom Governor Kemp named "AJ's Law."
The event is open to individuals of all backgrounds and experience levels, including school personnel. Participants will undergo hands-on training exercises and simulations to enhance their skills in responding to seizure emergencies. Upon completion of the training, participants will receive certification in Seizure First Aid.
In summary, the Epilepsy Train-A-Thon event organized by Rep. Eric Bell aims to provide essential training and support for individuals dealing with epilepsy or seizure disorders in Clayton County. The event underscores the importance of education, awareness, and inclusivity in creating a supportive environment for those affected by epilepsy.
