The Atlanta Hawks and State Farm have announced plans for a Million Meal Pack event slated for July 16 that is being heralded as the team’s largest service initiative so far in the community.
“The partnership between the Hawks and State Farm is rooted in a commitment to improving our community,” Steve Koonin, CEO of the Atlanta Hawks and State Farm Arena, said in a recent statement.
Koonin also invited members of the community to help with the event, saying, “We are excited to invite all of Atlanta to volunteer with us and help us pack one million meals as we make a monumental effort to fight food insecurity locally.”
To help facilitate the event, the organizations are seeking more than 5,000 volunteers to help assemble one million meals that will be distributed throughout the metro Atlanta area. The event will have the operational support of hunger relief organization U.S. Hunger.
Hunger is an issue that heavily affects the Atlanta community. Recent statistics provided by the Atlanta Community Food Bank say that nearly 12% of Georgians are now living with food insecurity. It also affects one in six children.
The Hawks and State Farm are drawing upon the power of the community, asking employee and community groups, schools, churches, sororities, fraternities, and local businesses, along with individuals ages five and up to register for at least one shift on Saturday, July 16, to help pack meals and distribute them to those in need.
