Georgia State University issued the following announcement on Dec. 13.
The College of the Arts at Georgia State University announced the appointment of Chester Phillips as director of the School of Music, where he has served as interim director since July 2021.
“Dr. Phillips’ energy and his deep institutional knowledge make him the right person for this important position,” said Wade Weast, dean of the College of the Arts. “The continued success of the School of Music is essential to many dimensions of our college’s strategic plan.”
Phillips has served on the faculty at Georgia State University since 2009 and was recently promoted to professor. As the founding director of Athletic Bands, he established the award-winning Georgia State University Panther Band, which has performed in the 2013 Presidential Inaugural Parade, 2014 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Super Bowl LIII Pepsi Halftime Show in 2019 and will perform in the 2022 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, Calif. He has presented professionally in more than 30 states and five countries. In addition to his teaching and research/creative duties, Phillips is a clinician for the Educational Division of Conn-Selmer Inc. and was recently elected the College Division Chair for Georgia Music Educators Association.

Phillips will vacate his role as director of Athletic Bands and a search will begin immediately for that position.
