Sen. Sally Harrell (D-Atlanta) won a Telly Award for her video advocating for the ban of single-use plastics.

In February 2020, before the COVID-19 shutdown, Harrell filed SB 434 which would have banned the use of single-use plastics including plastic foam containers and plastic grocery bags, she said on Facebook.

"We won a Gold Telly Award!" Harrell said in that post.

To support this effort, officials from Harrell's district produced a video titled: “Ban the Styrofoam and Single-Use Plastic Bags.” Harrell submitted it for a Telly Award under the On-line/Eco-Friendly category, and it won a Gold Telly Award.

The Telly Awards honor excellence in local, regional and cable television commercials, including non-broadcast video and television programming and the moving image on and offline, the organization said.

Harrell thanked her friends, Mria and Michael Dangerfield and their son Evan Dangerfield for filming her video that was produced with a zero dollar budget.

"Thanks to Mria for documenting our efforts through video. It’s a medium I have not always felt comfortable with, but Mria gently walks me through the process. With the Telly Award, she has turned our efforts into gold!" Harrell said in her Facebook post.

The Telly Awards honors distinction in video and television across all types of video. The On-line/Eco-Friendly category that the senator submitted her video to had approximately 12,000 entries from across the U.S. and and 5 continents around the world.
