The NFC South division title will be decided in the final week of the NFL regular season. Both the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Carolina Panthers remain in contention, with each team facing a different path to clinching the division.
The Panthers can secure the division by either defeating or tying with the Buccaneers, or if the Atlanta Falcons win against the New Orleans Saints. The Buccaneers, on the other hand, need to beat Carolina and have New Orleans defeat Atlanta to claim first place.
Neither Carolina nor Tampa Bay has had consistent success leading up to Week 18. The Panthers have alternated wins and losses since Week 7, while Tampa Bay has only one victory in its last eight games. In contrast, both Atlanta and New Orleans are on winning streaks: Atlanta has won three straight games, including a notable Monday night victory over the Los Angeles Rams, and New Orleans has won four consecutive games.
After 17 weeks of play, standings show Carolina at 8-8 (3-2 within the division), followed by Tampa Bay and Atlanta both at 7-9 (2-3 in division), and New Orleans at 6-10 (3-2).
In their most recent game, Carolina lost to Seattle 27-10. Running back Rico Dowdle led with 59 yards on 12 carries despite an overall offensive struggle for just 2.7 yards per play. Cornerback Mike Jackson was a defensive standout with several tackles and an interception.
Panthers head coach Dave Canales commented on their situation: “It was going to come down to this game, us handling our business and facing the Bucs one more time on the last game of the season. Couldn’t ask for a better situation for this. The guys are excited and fired up about that and we got to get over the fact that we missed an opportunity with the Bucs losing that game, but our focus has to go to the next one really quickly.”
Tampa Bay recently fell short against Miami by a score of 20-17. Wide receiver Chris Godwin caught seven passes for 108 yards and a touchdown as he led their offense. Outside linebacker Yaya Diaby recorded his seventh sack of the year along with six tackles.
Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles said: “Working on us – accountability and working on us. Not worrying about the opponent next week, not worrying about we have one more game to win and we get another chance to play in the playoffs or whatever the case may be, because it’s a hard feeling when you lose that many a row and the way you lose them coming down to the end with the things that we’ve done to lose these ball games is frustrating, but we have to be grown men about this and look ourselves in the mirror. Success is a hard road, and right now we’re taking the hard road.”
Atlanta secured a close win over Los Angeles (27-24). Running back Bijan Robinson set a franchise record for scrimmage yards in a season after gaining another 229 yards against LA. Rookie safety Xavier Watts made two interceptions during critical moments of play.
Falcons head coach Raheem Morris stated: “I think these guys are fighters. I think these guys love football. I think the world of this football team. I think these guys are built for this. I told you earlier, I know we joke about it a lot, but I tell you, we have to find ways to win and they just found ways to win and they’re doing that now. When you’re talking about finding ways to win, you’re talking about people making plays, you’re talking about people doing exceptional jobs at a very high level and that’s what we’re seeing.”
New Orleans defeated Tennessee (34-26) behind rookie quarterback Tyler Shough’s strong performance—22 completions out of 27 attempts for 333 yards without turnovers—and outside linebacker Chase Young’s pass rush efforts.
Saints head coach Kellen Moore remarked: “What everyone just watched is two quarterbacks that are probably going to be big-time quarterbacks in our league for a really long time. So, we’re fortunate to have Tyler.”
As Week 18 approaches:
– The Panthers host Tampa Bay.
– The Buccaneers visit Carolina.
– The Falcons face New Orleans at home.
– The Saints travel to Atlanta.
The outcome of these matchups will determine which team claims first place in NFC South heading into postseason play.
