Billy Bowman Jr. secured his first career interception during the Atlanta Falcons’ “Sunday Night Football” victory over the Minnesota Vikings, marking a milestone both for himself and for the team’s 2025 season. Earlier in Week 1, Bowman had also registered Atlanta’s first sack of the year.
The game featured several notable achievements by Atlanta’s rookie defenders. Jalon Walker and James Pearce Jr. recorded their first career sacks, while Xavier Watts joined Bowman with his own inaugural interception. Second-year players Ruke Orhorhoro and Brandon Dorlus also tallied their first career sacks. The Falcons’ defense finished with six sacks and 16 quarterback pressures.
“You gotta talk about the kids up front,” head coach Raheem Morris said after the win. “And you gotta call them kids. Those young guys came out and played.”
The organization’s focus on youth was clear following significant draft investments in defensive talent earlier this year. According to Morris, “We brought those guys in to do that.” He emphasized that the team intended to play its younger defenders early in their careers.
This approach paid off with historical results: The five sacks recorded in the first half were Atlanta’s most in a half since Week 9 of the 2009 season against Washington, and the most in any half of a road game since Week 12 of 2002 at Carolina—both instances where they also achieved five sacks before halftime. Additionally, it was the first time since a 2004 matchup against Arizona that Atlanta posted at least six sacks and four turnovers in one game.
“It’s what we talked about all throughout the offseason, those guys having big roles for us whether it was rushing, whether it was ball hawking for us. Both of those things were on display today,” Morris said. “I can’t say enough about those young guys. I can’t say enough about what they’ve done. They’re learning how to play football every single day. They are learning how to live this NFL life every single day and they’re loving it and they’re embracing it.”
