The Atlanta Falcons were defeated by the Carolina Panthers, 30-0, in their Week 3 matchup at Bank of America Stadium. The game was attended by 71,129 fans and marked the first shutout of the 2025 NFL season.
Despite the loss, Falcons running back Bijan Robinson recorded 111 yards from scrimmage. This achievement brings his total to an NFL-high 21 games with at least 100 yards from scrimmage since entering the league in 2023. Robinson is also the first Falcons running back since Williams Andrews in 1983 to start a season with three consecutive games of at least 100 yards from scrimmage. Sunday’s game was Robinson’s ninth straight with at least 90 yards from scrimmage, which is currently the longest active streak in the league.
Safety DeMarcco Hellams recovered a muffed punt in the first quarter, giving Atlanta three such recoveries since the start of last season—a figure that ties them for most in the NFL alongside Pittsburgh.
Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. had his streak of consecutive pass attempts without an interception end at 84 after being picked off in the third quarter. This run ranks as the fourth-longest to begin a season in franchise history; Michael Vick holds Atlanta’s record with a streak of 143 set during the 2002 campaign.
Inside linebacker Kaden Elliss finished with nine tackles and one sack. He now has ten games since 2022 where he has registered both a sack and at least seven tackles, tying him for most such performances among all NFL linebackers over that span.
Dee Alford started in place of injured cornerback A.J. Terrell Jr., who missed out due to a hamstring injury. Alford posted two passes defensed—matching his single-game best—and now has six career games with more than one pass defensed.
The defeat ended Atlanta’s run of scoring points in road games at 78 consecutive contests—a streak dating back to December 2015. Their previous longest stretch lasted for 91 away games between December 2004 and December 2015. The last time Atlanta was shut out on the road was also against Carolina during Week 14 of the 2015 season.
Through three weeks this year, no Falcons wide receiver or tight end has caught a touchdown pass; their only passing touchdown came on a connection between Penix Jr. and Robinson during Week 1.
Atlanta managed to outgain Carolina by over one hundred yards (332-224) but still lost by thirty points while being held scoreless—a rare occurrence not seen since Miami’s loss to Baltimore during Week 7 of 1970 when they gained more yardage but lost by thirty-five points without scoring.
Falcons head coach Raheem Morris described it as “a very humbling game,” adding: “This week, we rode the emotional rollercoaster, and we were down.”
Running back Bijan Robinson commented on his surprise about Sunday’s outcome: “I was surprised, man. I didn’t want to lose by 30 today. Obviously, nobody did. But it happened. I believe this can either break a team or make a team. For us, this needs to make this team.”
Safety Jessie Bates III addressed how Atlanta will respond: “It wasn’t good enough. We know we’re a better team than that, and unfortunately it didn’t show today… We got to stick together… This game is not going to define who we are as a group…”
Panthers head coach Dave Canales expressed respect for Atlanta: “I have a lot of respect for the Falcons, for the group that they have over there… I respect Raheem Morris to the utmost and the schemes that they run on defense and on offense…”
Top performers included Michael Penix Jr., who completed eighteen passes for seventy-two yards but threw two interceptions; Chuba Hubbard led all rushers with seventy-three yards; Drake London topped Falcon receivers with fifty-five receiving yards; Xavier Watts made nine tackles for Atlanta.
The Falcons (1-2) will next face Washington Commanders (2-1) at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
