The Atlanta Falcons defense has had a strong start to the season, currently ranked first in the NFL for total defense and pass defense. The team is allowing just 244.0 yards per game overall and 135.0 passing yards per game.
While veteran players have contributed significantly, the impact of the rookie class has been notable. Head coach Raheem Morris and defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich indicated during the offseason that rookies would see substantial playing time due to their quick adaptation and understanding of the system.
Data compiled with Microsoft Copilot from Stats LLC. and Next Gen Stats shows that Falcons rookies have played a combined 548 defensive snaps, the sixth-most among NFL teams. Defensive backs Xavier Watts and Billy Bowman accounted for 68% of those snaps and have each generated turnovers this season. Edge rushers Jalon Walker and James Pearce Jr. have combined for 174 snaps, ranking third among linebacker/edge rookie groups in the league.
The Falcons defense has recorded 199 tackles, with 50 (25.1%) made by rookies, which is the third-highest percentage of rookie tackles in the league. Falcons rookies have also contributed four of the team’s forced fumbles and interceptions, making up 66.7% of such plays—the highest proportion in the league according to Stats LLC.
Xavier Watts leads all NFL rookies with four passes defensed and two interceptions through five weeks. He is the first Falcons rookie since Deion Jones in 2016 to have multiple interceptions in a season, and the first since 1980 to record more than one interception within his first four games. Stats LLC. notes that Watts reached two interceptions and over 20 tackles faster than any other Falcon, achieving this in only four games.
The Falcons’ defense has held opposing quarterbacks to a league-low completion rate of 60.6% and boasts a coverage success rate of 55.6%, which ranks sixth according to Next Gen Stats. Billy Bowman has allowed only eight completions on 13 targets for a passer rating of 51.1%, which is second-lowest among rookies per Stats LLC. Bowman also secured an interception this season; he and Watts became the first Falcons rookie pair to record interceptions in a single game since Robert Alford and Desmond Trufant did so in 2013.
First-round picks Jalon Walker and James Pearce Jr. have been effective in pass rush roles, each recording at least half a sack this year. Next Gen Stats indicate that Pearce leads all rookies with a pressure rate of 17.6%, recording nine pressures in 79 snaps.
Walker has posted multiple tackles in each of his four games played, joining only two other rookies with that achievement while also recording a sack. He is the first NFL player since Sean Weatherspoon in 2010 to have at least one sack and at least two tackles in each of his first four games.
Coach Ulbrich’s system has allowed these rookies to play with confidence and instinct. The Falcons will face a significant challenge against quarterback Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football, a matchup against one of the league’s top offenses.
