The Atlanta Falcons secured a 34-27 victory over the Washington Commanders on Sunday, bouncing back after being shut out by the Carolina Panthers in Week 3. The team aimed to demonstrate their offensive potential following last week’s defeat.
Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. addressed the importance of a strong performance before the game. “It showed what this team is really about,” Penix said after the win.
Head coach Raheem Morris acknowledged criticism from fans and analysts following the previous loss, stating, “When you lose like that… stones can be thrown.” He emphasized that only improved play would address those concerns.
In preparation for Sunday’s game, the Falcons made a strategic adjustment by moving offensive coordinator Zac Robinson from the coaches’ box to the field to call plays. Penix described this move as beneficial: “It gave us confidence. To be able to come over to the sideline and be able to hear from him exactly the way he’s seeing it, the way he wants to set us up with the plays on the next drive, it was awesome.”
Penix completed eight passes of more than 15 yards and totaled 300 passing yards—the first time he reached such numbers in 2025. Morris awarded Penix a game ball for his efforts and resilience under scrutiny during the week.
Before this matchup, no Falcons receiver or tight end had caught a touchdown pass this season, and they had managed only one touchdown in their last eight quarters. On Sunday, four players—Drake London, Bijan Robinson, Kyle Pitts, and Tyler Allgeier—scored touchdowns. London led receivers with 110 yards after having only 156 through three games. Bijan Robinson contributed 181 total yards from scrimmage.
Robinson and London became the first Falcons running back/wide receiver duo since William Andrews and Alfred Jackson in 1981 to each record more than 100 receiving yards in a single game.
London commented on what this win means for team morale: “It can mean the world to a lot of people. It meant the world to me today.” Robinson added that last week’s loss prompted a shift in mindset: “I feel last week was supposed to happen how it was supposed to happen because it put us in a new mindset… So, our urgency was very high this week.”
Morris framed Sunday’s result as an answer for both players and fans: “When you talk about coming off the nasty, disgusting taste that we left out there for ourselves… then that was our apology to our fans today.”
The Falcons now enter their bye week before facing Buffalo Bills in Week 6’s Monday Night Football.
