The Atlanta Falcons are set to continue their search for a reliable kicker after recent struggles at the position. Head coach Raheem Morris announced on Monday that the team will bring in competition for Parker Romo this week.
Last Friday, the Falcons signed Romo to the active roster as their kicker and released Younghoe Koo, who had been with the team for several years. Koo’s performance had declined recently, highlighted by a missed 44-yard field goal that ended Atlanta’s Week 1 loss to Tampa Bay. Following that game, Romo was brought in along with other kickers to compete for the job. He was initially added to the practice squad before being named starting kicker ahead of Week 2 against Minnesota.
Romo impressed in his debut, making all five of his field goal attempts, including one from 54 yards. His kicks played a significant role in a win where Atlanta’s offense managed only one touchdown despite five trips to the red zone.
However, Romo struggled during Sunday’s game against Carolina, missing two first-quarter field goals from 49 and 55 yards as the Falcons were shut out.
“Obviously, it was not good enough and I have to be better for the team,” Romo said after the game. “When they call me out onto the field, I need to go out there and make points. Today, I didn’t do that.”
When asked if Romo would remain the starter going into Week 4, Morris confirmed that more competition is coming.
“That’s what we’ve gotta do,” Morris said. “You have to do that until you get it right, and you cannot allow that to be the reason to have this stuff happen. Right? He went 5-for-5 the week before. He went 0-for-2 this week. You gotta bring competition in, and that is something we’re working diligently at.”
