The Atlanta Falcons secured a 22-6 victory over the Minnesota Vikings in their Week 2 game at U.S. Bank Stadium, with 66,859 fans in attendance. The win marks a notable improvement for the Falcons, who saw significant gains in both offensive and defensive performance compared to their season opener.

Running back Bijan Robinson was a key contributor, rushing for 143 yards—his second-highest single-game total. He also recorded more rushing yards after contact on the opening drive (29) than his total from Week 1 (24). Robinson’s combined 292 yards from scrimmage through two games is the fourth most to start a season in franchise history and the highest since Andre Rison’s 316 yards in 1994.

The team improved its ground game substantially, posting 218 rushing yards against Minnesota—149 more than their previous week. This is Atlanta’s largest single-season game-to-game increase since improving by 182 rushing yards between Weeks 14 and 15 of the 2016 season.

Defensively, all four rookie players from Atlanta’s latest draft class achieved career firsts: Jalon Walker and James Pearce Jr. each recorded their first sacks, while Xavier Watts and Billy Bowman Jr. each notched their first interceptions. It was the first time since 2006 that two Falcons rookies had at least half a sack in one game, and the first time since 2013 that two rookies made an interception in the same contest.

Atlanta allowed only six points—the second-fewest ever surrendered by the team in a road opener. The fewest remains three points against New Orleans in 1970.

Kicker Parker Romo made his debut just five days after joining the team and converted five field goals, surpassing Younghoe Koo’s previous record of four field goals made by a Falcons kicker in his debut. Romo became only the sixth player in NFL history to make five or more field goals during his debut with a new team; Austin Seibert holds the record with seven.

Seven of eight defensive players responsible for either a sack or turnover are under age 25 and were drafted by Atlanta within the last three years: Zach Harrison (1.5 sacks), Ruke Orhorhoro (half sack), Brandon Dorlus (1.5 sacks), Walker (one sack), Pearce (half sack), Bowman (interception), and Watts (interception). Leonard Floyd, aged 33, also contributed one sack.

The last time Atlanta did not allow a touchdown on the road was Week 15 of the 2023 season against Carolina—a game they lost. For Minnesota, this marked only their third home game without reaching the end zone since U.S. Bank Stadium opened in 2016.

Falcons head coach Raheem Morris commented on improvements to the run game: “I can’t say enough about my guys, all my guys up front. They really came out. (Right guard Chris) Lindstrom right from the beginning – our leader – was at a lot of energy, played with a bunch of energy. He fired me up.”

Addressing whether defensive sacks are contagious among players, Morris said: “No, just a lot of pressure from Mr. (Arthur) Blank to get after the passer. Those guys really respond when he comes down. Those guys really respond when we bring those guys in. No, all joking aside, we brought those guys in to do that. I don’t know if it’s contagious, but it’s fun.”

Bijan Robinson spoke about crowd noise affecting play: “It didn’t affect us. I mean, I ain’t gonna lie: Their crowd is awesome. They have a great crowd… Like, that did affect us… But as the game started going on… we settled down… When we did that, man, we were clicking.”

Jalon Walker explained his sack celebration: “That’s the ‘Walk.’ But yeah, shoutout to Conor McGregor for the inspiration. I’ve been doing that since I was at Georgia.”

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell addressed giving up six sacks: “There were definitely some times where guys got beat on some 1-on-1 situations… you felt it… The sacks come from a lack of execution sometimes on that down…”

Game leaders included Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy with two interceptions and six sacks taken; Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr., who completed thirteen passes for 135 yards; Bijan Robinson leading rushers; Tyler Allgeier adding another touchdown; Justin Jefferson topping receivers for Minnesota; Drake London leading Falcons receivers; and Theo Jackson making nine tackles for Minnesota.

Looking ahead to Week 3, Atlanta will face Carolina Panthers at Bank of America Stadium Sunday at 1 p.m., broadcast live on FOX.
