The Atlanta Falcons began their 2025 NFL season with a narrow 23-20 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, where more than 71,000 fans were in attendance.

Running back Bijan Robinson made an early impact by turning a short pass from quarterback Michael Penix Jr. into a 50-yard touchdown on the opening drive. This marked the first time since 2012 that Atlanta scored a touchdown on its initial possession of a season. The play was also Robinson’s second career receiving touchdown of at least 50 yards, tying him with three other Falcons running backs for the most in franchise history.

Robinson reached a top speed of 19.29 mph during his scoring play, and Penix set a new personal best with the completion. Penix finished the game with 298 passing yards, continuing his streak of throwing for at least 200 yards in each of his four career starts—a feat previously matched only by Mike Moroski for Atlanta in the early 1980s.

Robinson accumulated 124 yards from scrimmage, bringing his total to 19 games with at least 100 scrimmage yards since entering the league in 2023. That is currently the highest mark among NFL players over that period.

On defense, rookie cornerback Billy Bowman Jr. recorded half a sack in his debut, becoming just the tenth Falcons rookie to register a sack in their first NFL game since sacks became an official stat in 1982.

The Falcons defense forced Tampa Bay into three-and-out drives on their first two possessions—something Atlanta last accomplished on consecutive drives during Week 16 of last season and had not done to open both defensive series of a season since Week 1 of 2015.

Atlanta drew two roughing-the-passer penalties during an extended fourth-quarter scoring drive after being flagged only three times for that infraction all last year.

By halftime, both teams were tied at ten points apiece—the seventh such occurrence between these NFC South rivals—with Atlanta holding a historical edge in those situations.

Since 2018, Atlanta has struggled in season openers and now holds just one win over eight attempts; that victory came against Carolina last year. The team’s last playoff appearance was following their opener win against Chicago in 2017.

Falcons head coach Raheem Morris commented on handling emotions after the close loss: “We were that close today. I don’t think anything is causing panic. I think our guys will go find a way to win the game next week.”

Edge rusher Arnold Ebiketie spoke about starting strong defensively: “The goal was kind of to represent our style at the beginning of the game. We just have to find a way to close the game, like how to play with the same type of intensity the whole game.”

Tight end Kyle Pitts Sr., reflecting on Penix’s effort near the goal line, said: “I think it was great to see him dive like that. He looked a little taller than he is when he was stretching like that. Great to see him just put his body on the line for his teammates.”

Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles credited his team’s defense for limiting Robinson’s rushing output: “He’s a heck of a back. They’ve got two of them. They’ve got two ‘hellafied’ backs that are going to wreak havoc on this league. For us to stop them from running the ball and making them check it down, that was huge for us.”

Tampa Bay quarterback Baker Mayfield shared praise for Penix: “I told him after the game that he’s going be a problem in this league for a long time. I think he’s a great player. He’s decisive, goes through his reads, trusts his guys. He’s young, but he’s got it.”

Among statistical leaders: Bijan Robinson led all receivers with six catches for 100 yards and one touchdown; Michael Penix Jr., completed twenty-seven passes for nearly three hundred yards; and Billy Bowman Jr., made an impression defensively as part of an overall strong start by Atlanta’s unit despite falling short late.

Next week, Atlanta (0-1) will travel north to face Minnesota Vikings under prime-time lights at U.S Bank Stadium.
