The Atlanta Falcons’ 30-0 defeat by the Carolina Panthers has altered the early landscape of the NFC South division. Following the loss, the Falcons dropped to third place in the standings, while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers extended their lead at the top after a narrow win.
As of Week 3, the NFC South standings are as follows: Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-0), Carolina Panthers (1-2), Atlanta Falcons (1-2), and New Orleans Saints (0-3).
The Buccaneers secured a 29-27 victory over the New York Jets. Wide receiver Emeka Egbuka was recognized for his performance, catching six passes for 85 yards despite entering the game with an injury. Linebacker Yaya Diaby also stood out defensively, contributing significantly to team performance according to TruMedia’s Expected Points Added metric. However, head coach Todd Bowles pointed out that red zone execution remains an area for improvement, noting that penalties and negative plays nearly cost them the game. “It’s hard to win in this league, period. Us shooting ourselves in the foot doesn’t help it much, but the resiliency they have to come back and win those games. Got to stack them early while you iron out your kinks. We’re stacking them early this year,” Bowles said.
The Carolina Panthers rebounded with a dominant shutout against Atlanta. Running back Chuba Hubbard led offensively with 73 rushing yards on 17 carries and played a key role in pass protection. On defense, cornerback Chau Smith-Wade’s interception return for a touchdown shifted momentum decisively in Carolina’s favor. Despite their success, head coach Dave Canales highlighted third down offense as an area needing attention after converting only three of eleven attempts. Canales commented: “When you have a chance to score in every phase, you give yourself a great chance to win. I thought the defense played an unbelievable game. The run game plan, the execution, the communication, all that stuff that we’ve been really just harping on is where we have to continue to grow.”
For Atlanta, left tackle Jake Matthews was noted for his strong play in run blocking during an otherwise difficult afternoon for the offense. Rookie safety Xavier Watts led defensively with nine tackles and demonstrated promise both near the line of scrimmage and in open field situations. The Falcons’ scoring troubles continue; they currently rank near last in points per game at 14 on average. Head coach Raheem Morris addressed his team’s need for improvement: “You’ve got to go out there and coach your guys. Got to go out there, put it in the forefront of their minds, got to talk about it, got to be very clear in your messaging. You have to let these guys know that those can’t be the things that we do. We have to go out and execute the way that we are capable of executing. We did not do that today.”
The New Orleans Saints remain winless after falling 44-13 against Seattle Seahawks. Wide receiver Chris Olave was their leading offensive contributor with ten catches for 57 yards; linebacker Demario Davis led defensively with eleven tackles but could not prevent special teams breakdowns including a blocked punt and a long return touchdown by Seattle’s Tory Horton early in the game. Head coach Kellen Moore remarked: “We did not do enough to start the game to put ourselves in a really good position to be competitive there. And so there’s no one is going to feel bad for you. No one is going to come save you or anything. We got to put in a bunch of work, and we gotta get better right now and put ourselves in better position moving forward.”
Each team will play again Sunday at 1 p.m., with Tampa Bay hosting Philadelphia Eagles, Carolina visiting New England Patriots, Atlanta facing Washington Commanders at home, and New Orleans traveling to Buffalo Bills.
