The Atlanta Falcons’ defense demonstrated significant improvement in their recent victory over the Buffalo Bills on “Monday Night Football.” This performance, combined with their play through the first five games of the season, has positioned Atlanta as a leading defensive team in the league.
Falcons cornerback A.J. Terrell Jr. commented on the team’s progress, stating, “I wouldn’t even say just tonight. I mean, it was tonight. We took a big step forward. But I think even throughout the whole season, we’ve always been taking steps whether it’s been wins or losses.”
Heading into Week 7, the Falcons hold a 3-2 record. Their defense ranks first in yards allowed and pass defense, seventeenth in run defense, and seventh in scoring defense. The team is allowing an average of 253.4 total yards, 139.4 passing yards, 114 rushing yards, and 20 points per game.
Atlanta’s previous wins came against the Minnesota Vikings and Washington Commanders, both playoff teams last season. However, those opponents featured less experienced quarterbacks: J.J. McCarthy for the Vikings and Marcus Mariota for the Commanders.
The matchup against Buffalo presented a different challenge. Bills quarterback Josh Allen, who has led his team to six consecutive playoff appearances since being drafted in 2018, was limited by the Falcons’ defense to a 57.7% completion rate and a season-low 180 passing yards. Allen threw two touchdowns and two interceptions and was sacked four times, his highest this season.
Falcons inside linebacker Kaden Elliss reflected on the performance: “Every week is a test, and every team in the NFL is good. Right? So, it wasn’t the first test, but it’s obviously a very good team that it was a test — and we showed up.”
Head coach Raheem Morris praised the defensive execution, saying, “They went out and executed their game plan. They did a great job. I can’t wait to watch the film to see all the execution and the things that we talked about come to life.”
The Falcons now prepare for a road game against the San Francisco 49ers, another strong opponent despite recent injuries. The 49ers have made four playoff appearances and two Super Bowl trips in the past six seasons.
Atlanta is seeking its first playoff appearance since 2017, which was also the last time their defense ranked in the top ten. That year, they were ninth in offensive yards allowed and rushing yards allowed per game, twelfth in passing yards allowed per game, and eighth in points allowed per game.
Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich continues to push for improvement. Inside linebacker Divine Deablo emphasized the need for consistency: “Obviously, we need to be consistent. But this is the team I envisioned.”
