Atlanta United will begin its final three-match road stretch of the season this weekend with a game against the New England Revolution in Foxborough. Both teams have been eliminated from playoff contention, but Atlanta is aiming for its second away win of the season. The team hopes to build on last week’s performance, which saw improvement against a top Western Conference opponent.
The 1-1 draw against San Diego last weekend reflected Atlanta’s challenges this season. Although the team created several quality scoring opportunities and had a higher expected goals (xG) value than their opponent in 16 out of 30 matches, they have only managed to win three of those games. This season, Atlanta has an xG of 51.9 but has scored just 37 goals, highlighting the need for more efficient finishing, especially in away games.
New England recently appointed Pablo Moreira as interim coach after letting go of their previous manager. Last weekend, under Moreira’s leadership, the Revolution narrowly lost to Philadelphia Union by conceding a goal in the final minutes. Scoring has been a persistent problem for New England; despite having Carles Gil—who has recorded 10 goals and 11 assists—they have scored only 39 goals all year. Gil remains influential and has contributed nine goals in ten regular-season matches against Atlanta United.
One strength for Atlanta this season has been converting big chances into goals at a rate of 73.7%, which ranks second highest in Major League Soccer ahead of this weekend’s match. However, they are ranked 25th in MLS for total big chances created and will focus on generating more such opportunities as they face New England.
Saturday’s match kicks off at Gillette Stadium at 7:30 p.m. ET and can be viewed on MLS Season Pass via Apple TV or heard on Sports Radio 92.9 The Game (English) and La Mejor – AM 1600 (Spanish).
