Atlanta United lost 2-0 to the New England Revolution on Sunday, continuing its struggles away from home. The match was balanced in the first half, with Atlanta creating several opportunities through set pieces and attacks led by Miguel Almirón and Saba Lobjanidze. Jamal Thiaré had a goal disallowed for offside.
New England took control after halftime. Dor Turgeman, making his Major League Soccer debut, scored in the 72nd minute to put New England ahead. Three minutes later, Turgeman assisted Leo Campana following a counter-attack that began after Atlanta’s corner kick. Campana’s goal marked his sixth of the season and secured the win for New England.
The result dropped Atlanta United to 14th place with 27 points, while New England stayed in 10th position with 32 points.
Leo Afonso made his MLS regular season debut for Atlanta United in the 85th minute. The Brazilian forward joined Atlanta during the summer transfer window from Inter Miami CF and had previously played in the Leagues Cup against Atlas.
Coach Ronny Deila made tactical changes throughout the game, including bringing on Emmanuel Latte Lath for Thiaré in the second half. Despite attempts to respond offensively, Atlanta could not recover after conceding two quick goals.
Atlanta United will travel next weekend to face LAFC in Los Angeles on Sunday, October 5 at 9:00 p.m. ET.
