Atlanta United and Toronto FC played to a scoreless draw at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday. Both teams struggled to create clear chances, with only three shots on target combined during the match.

The game began with Atlanta United creating an early opportunity when Almirón found space behind the defense and crossed toward Alexey Miranchuk, but the ball narrowly missed its mark. Saba Lobjanidze also had a shot blocked soon after.

Toronto responded with periods of possession in the opening 20 minutes. In the 17th minute, Atlanta countered through Luke Brennan and Almirón, setting up Miranchuk for a left-footed attempt that missed wide. Defensively, Atlanta was solid in the first half, not allowing a shot on goal for more than 30 minutes and limiting Toronto to just 0.03 expected goals. Stian Gregersen made a key tackle against Ola Brynhildsen in what was one of Toronto’s best opportunities before halftime.

Jayden Hibbert made an early save for Atlanta at the start of the second half as Toronto pressed forward. Head coach Ronny Deila made changes around the hour mark, bringing on Brooks Lennon, Steven Alzate, and Jamal Thiaré in a triple substitution to try to shift momentum.

As play continued, both teams found it difficult to break down defenses or capitalize on set pieces amid frequent stoppages. Late substitutions included Cayman Togashi and Juan Berrocal entering for Atlanta United in the final stages.

During five minutes of added time, Atlanta pushed for a late winner but could not convert their pressure into a goal. The match concluded without either side scoring.

Defensive performances stood out for Atlanta United’s backline. Pedro Amador covered significant ground defensively while Stian Gregersen excelled in aerial duels and tackles. Enea Mihaj also disrupted several Toronto attacks at their source.

Atlanta United secured its third clean sheet of the season with this result. The team will next travel north to face Nashville SC on Saturday, August 30 at 8:30 p.m., marking their second meeting with their rivals this year.
