Atlanta United 2 began its 2026 season with a 1-1 draw against New England Revolution II in Smithfield, Rhode Island. The match ended in regulation time before Atlanta lost the extra-point penalty shootout 4-2.
Liam Butts was involved in Atlanta’s opening goal, forcing an own goal against his former team. In the early minutes, new signings Cameron Dunbar and Butts combined for a chance that was blocked by New England’s Schinieder Mimy. Atlanta continued to press as Santiago Pita delivered a long pass that led to another attempt from Dunbar, whose shot rebounded off the crossbar after being spilled by the goalkeeper. Butts then followed up, resulting in an own goal and giving Atlanta United 2 a 1-0 lead.
Jonathan Ransom, Atlanta’s 18-year-old goalkeeper, played a key role in the first half with composed passing and a significant save in the 40th minute to deny Cristiano Oliveira.
New England responded quickly after halftime. Jayden Da forced another save from Ransom early in the second half. Continued pressure from Revolution II led to Myles Morgan equalizing in the 70th minute following a low cross from Oliveira.
In the closing stages, Da had another chance to put New England ahead but Ransom made another reflex save. Despite sustained pressure from Revolution II, neither side could find a winner before full time.
During the penalty shootout, Seyi Fakiyesi and Moises Tablante had their attempts saved by Donovan Parisian while New England converted all of its penalties. As a result, Atlanta United 2 took one point from its season opener.
