The Atlanta Public Schools Nutrition Department (APSND) marked National School Breakfast Week by adding a new item to its breakfast menu. On March 4, APSND introduced the Poffitz Pancake Puff Bites, chosen based on feedback from student taste testers known as the Chew Crew.
These students participated in the first APS Nutrition Services Food Show held in January, where they sampled more than 50 different school menu items. Their input led to the selection of the pancake bites as a new breakfast option.
Breakfast participation in Atlanta Public Schools has risen from just under 35% to over 38%, slightly surpassing the district’s goal. The number of breakfasts served daily increased from about 13,000 to more than 14,000 meals during this period.
APSND offers a variety of whole grain and lean protein options with fruit every day at breakfast. The department follows USDA nutrition guidelines for calories, sodium, saturated fat, and sugar.
“The district continues to see strong progress in school breakfast participation,” said APSND senior director Susan Stone. “This growth highlights the impact of continued menu enhancements, student engagement efforts, and special promotions such as National School Breakfast Week. Initiatives like the Chew Crew student taste testing events and the introduction of highly rated menu items, such as the new Poffitz Pancake Puff Bites featured during National School Breakfast Week, help ensure menus reflect student preferences while supporting increased participation across schools.”
