Atlanta Public Schools announced on Mar. 17 the winners of its districtwide spelling bee and the second annual Spanish Spelling Bee, recognizing students for their achievements in language skills.

The spelling bees highlight the importance of vocabulary development, reading comprehension, and concentration among students. These competitions provide an opportunity for participants to demonstrate their command of language before judges, peers, families, and educators.

Aria Wood from West Manor Elementary School won first place in the APS District Spelling Bee. Kent Howard from The B.E.S.T. Academy took second place, followed by Ava Belgrave from Kimberly Elementary School in third. Ada Clear from Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School placed fourth, and Rose Alexander from David T. Howard Middle School finished fifth. These five students will represent Atlanta Public Schools at the Regional Spelling Bee on February 28.

The district also hosted its second annual Spanish Spelling Bee at Sutton Middle School, organized by the Multilingual Programs and Services department for students in grades four through eight. Naomi Alvarado from Willis A. Sutton Middle School earned first place in this event. Atharva Gupta and Davis Mauldin, both from E. Rivers Elementary School, finished second and third respectively.

Participants in both competitions studied definitions, spellings, proper usage of words, and improved their reading and writing abilities while building confidence through public speaking under pressure.

Atlanta Public Schools congratulated all competitors and acknowledged the support provided by families, teachers, and school leaders throughout the preparation process.
